Local Chapter History
"Alpha Men," signifies the best of brotherhood among distinguished and intellectual Black men. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. had its birth on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Throughout the years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has spread over the United States, West Indies, Europe, Africa, and the Virgin Islands. It has since proved to be dominant over all other black Greek affiliations. The Fraternity exemplifies not only brotherhood and love for all mankind, but academic and social excellence to prepare its members with the necessary tools to cope with today's ever changing society.
During the Spring quarter of 1975, several young black men became interested in starting this great fraternity at the University of Tennessee at Martin. On November 15, 1975, following 22 weeks of hardship and togetherness, good times and bad, the "NINE SONS OF PHARAOH" survived and crossed the burning sands into the mighty land of Alpha Phi Alpha. The idea and dream that meant so much to these young men surely became a reality, for they were the brothers that gave birth to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Beta Chapter.

The Mu Beta Chapter was very active on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin and the brothers became some of the brightest minds that the University has ever hosted. From signature events like the Campus Hop and Feed A Family, Mu Beta set the standard when it came to how a fraternity should be viewed. Believing strongly, that an Alpha Man must have a spirit of service in 3 areas; Service to one's self, Service to one's Institution of College Rank, and Service to one's Community, the Mu Beta Chapter set out to be impactful in the lives of all around them. Although, these brothers lived up to the aims of our Dear Alpha, they would be known for the creative art form known as stepping. The Mu Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha dominated step shows across the country and left a lasting legacy with not only this fraternity, but those that witnessed one of their shows. In 1999, the Mu Beta Chapter and all of it's storied history and legacy were silenced, when it was dechartered, but there is one thing that every Alpha Man learns and that is, "THE SPIRIT OF ALPHA NEVER DIES."
In 2001, several young men made efforts to revitalize the Mu Beta Chapter and for many years, they were met with disappointment, frustration, and negativity. Through all of this, their spirit never wavered and they stayed true to their destination and desires birthed through Alpha. As the years came and left, these young men waited patiently, knowing that the crops that they had planted and skillfully taken care of were nearing maturity...the Harvest was upon us. Many men came and went, still with the desire to see a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin. In the period of 2004 through 2009, the General Organization afforded membership to several young men who would uphold high the name and serve their community and campus tirelessly. Towards, the end of 2005, Alpha Phi Alpha saw two brothers on campus, that could better aide in the process of acquiring a chapter. In 2006, several more brothers joined in the fight to cement a greater legacy at this institution. These brothers ensured that the work of Alpha was continued and that the presence of Alpha would be forever felt, and for that reason alone, must never be forgotten. On July 21, 2008, the General Organization approved the return of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated to the University of Tennessee at Martin, granting us our founding date. Approximately 7 months later on an ice cold Saturday, as snow fell upon the city of Martin, TN, 14 young men reincarnated the Mu Beta Chapter through what would be known as the "IMMORTAL TAU PSI CHAPTER."

Since their arrival, Tau Psi has been actively involved in community service and the implementation of quality programs for the student body. The brothers have implemented several projects aimed at impacting our community and continue to push towards academic and social excellence. They have served this university in various capacities and continue to provide a vehicle for young men to enhance what they all possess deep within. Alpha Phi Alpha is the standard and with our return cemented in the psyche' of this University, we know that we must continue to cement our place in the history of not only our beloved institution of college rank, but also Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
